The Blathering Duffer
The Solheim Cup 2026
TBD 26.08
The Solheim Cup is a team competition for women golfers pitting the best of USA against the best of Europe. It is played every 2 years, alternating between USA and European host countries. This year it is in Europe, hosted by Netherlands. Captains are selected by the respective governing bodies of golf and the captains pick the players. There are 12 players on each team.
This is the 20th Solheim Cup. The event is named after Karsten Solheim, a club manufacturer. Karsten along with his wife, Louise, were the driving force in the establishment of a competition that mirrors the Ryder Cup played by the men also every 2 years. There are 28 matches: 8 foursomes and 8 fourballs played over the first 2 days and 12 single matches played on the final day. Matches earn a point if won, 1/2 point if tied (Halved) and 0 points if lost. 14.5 points are needed to win the Cup from the current holder. To retain the cup, the current holder needs to earn 14 points. The USA currently holds the cup. USA leads the Cup record 11-7-1 (Win-Loss-Draw)
